What are Bonus Holiday and Christmas Activities you might ask?  Well, when it comes to the Holidays and Christmas Activities in Southern California, sometimes you come across events or celebrations that defy standard categorizations:  We figured that made them a bonus!

There are some places that are just too unique to lump in with theme parks or other places that put up lights or have parades to celebrate the holiday season.  Being SoCal, uniqueness can be more common than you think, so if we’ve missed some unique, interesting or even whacky Christmas celebrations from this list please write us a comment below so we can make sure to update the list (and go see it for ourselves!).

Nov 17th 2022 to January 1st 2023: Frosted by the Sea at the Hotel del Coronado

Holiday decorations and traditions at the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, CA has been a local fixture for more than 130 years (or at least according to the Coronado Times website), which includes the distinction of having had the world’s first electronically lit outdoor living Christmas tree! The celebrations are not just for guests staying at the hotel (though guests get daily resort credits towards the activities with their Seaside Holiday Package) but are available to the public to enjoy the festivities.

The Hotel del Coronado’s Frosted by the Sea celebration covers the iconic building in lights and festive decorations, and includes a beachside skating rink for their Skating by the Sea event.  In Skating by the Sea you can enjoy up to 90 minutes of Ice time, and your ticket purchase benefits the San Diego branch of the Make-A-Wish foundation.   There are not many places or times when you can Ice skate with views of the beach, so we’re hoping to get there this season.  It’s also possible to reserve a spot in the Frostbite Lounge, a rink side lounge area with a cozy fire pit and food and drink service for up to 6 people.

Other Holiday and Christmas activities at “The Del” include the “At First Light” lightshow which features the three historic pine trees in front of the hotel.  The huge pine trees are draped with lights that are set to music for an 11-minute show that occurs every 30 minutes from 5pm to 9pm nightly (weather permitting).  The “At First Light” lightshow is free to the public and showcases the Norfolk Pine that was originally made famous in 1904 as the first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree in the world!  The 11-minute show culminates with a “snow flurry” for that extra “winter wonderland” touch.

Not to be forgotten, the inside of the Hotel Del Coronado is gorgeously decorated every year with lights, holiday garlands and a giant Christmas tree.

Nov 17th 2022 – Jan 1st 2023: Santa’s Village (Skypark at Santa’s Village)

As probably the most Christmas-centric theme park in Southern California, Santa’s Village is a year-round Christmas attraction where you can meet Santa and Mrs Claus in their home-away-from-the-North-Pole as well as a host of Christmas and Northwoods-related characters! When the year draws towards the Holiday season, Santa’s Village pulls out all the stops!

Santa’s Village is full of lights for the evening, and you can also enjoy the Fantasy Forest Experience with a dazzling light display narrated by an ancient talking tree! As for Holiday and Christmas activities during the day, you can visit his workshop where you can experience making an ornament or toy, or the post office where elves sort his mail (and you can write him your own letter).  Ride the Northwoods express train, skate in the Silver Bells arena, enjoy a magician or puppet show or sing and dance to Christmas songs with Kid’s Imagine Nation.  To top it off, visit Santa’s house, enjoy their tree lighting show and interact with all the Northwoods characters!

During the rest of the year, you can still spend time with Santa and the Northwoods characters, but there is also a bike park for multiple skill levels, ziplining, climbing tower, archery, Axe throwing, a sharpshooters gallery, Fishing and a whole lot more!  There appears to be plenty of outdoor and indoor adventures for both kids and adults alike!

Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo adds a bunch of whimsical Holiday and Christmas activities to your zoo experience!  During the late afternoons and early evenings a whole range of activities occur including a holiday troubadour, juggling, story-telling, acrobatics, an acapella group, organized games and more!  You can even visit Santa at his factory to visit with Santa and get a photo.

As far as lights, the Front Street Toog Tree is lit and choreographed to holiday music with a show every 30 minutes from 4:55pm, and then at 6pm the first of two Aurora light experiences start with the Aurora Pathways.  New in 2022, with music and light effects and expanding upon the Aurora experience, friendly sprites will greet guests as the travel the paths to meet up at the Aurora light show.  A combination of light, sound and 3d projection with live performers, the Aurora spectacular highlights the beauty of wind, water and ice.

Also keep in mind to visit the Northern Frontier, a festive forest pathway located around the Polar Bear Plunge, with its holiday décor and tree lighting.  On top of the holiday decorations you’ll see polar bears, reindeer and more denizens of the frozen North.

Nov 5th 2022 – Jan 1st 2023: A Cabazon Dinosaurs Christmas

An Iconic roadside attraction, The Cabazon dinosaurs make for one of the more unusual Christmas attractions in SoCal.  The 65-foot (20m) tall Tyrannosaurus (Mr) Rex is re-painted with a Santa-Suit to celebrate the season and from dusk to 8pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays the many dinosaurs of the dinosaur walk are festively lit for your enjoyment.  During the day the dinosaur walk includes many pictures opportunities, a dino-dig, and fossil panning (though it appears not so many Holiday and Christmas activities).  Another unusual feature of the attraction is that the gift shop is located inside the body of Dinny (the 150-foot or 46-meter-long Brontosaurus statue).
